Are Cheddar Bay Biscuits gluten free?

Not at the restaurant. Red Lobster's allergen guide lists wheat, milk and soy in the biscuits, and gluten in their ingredients. It lists no egg, but the guide also warns that shared kitchens mean it can't rule out cross-contact with any allergen.

The gluten-free versions are the take-home mix and frozen biscuits below, not anything served in the restaurants. For eating out, see ordering gluten free at Red Lobster and the allergen page.

Cheddar Bay Biscuits at home

Red Lobster sells four versions in grocery stores under its Red Lobster at Home brand:

  • Cheddar Bay Biscuit Mix. 11.4 oz box. Add shredded cheddar and water, bake, then top with the melted herb butter.
  • Frozen Cheddar Bay Biscuits. 15.7 oz bag, ready from the oven in under 30 minutes.
  • Gluten-Free Cheddar Bay Biscuit Mix. The gluten-free version of the mix.
  • Gluten-Free Frozen Cheddar Bay Biscuits. The gluten-free version of the frozen biscuits.

The mix's label lists wheat, milk and soy, and says it may contain eggs and tree nuts. To bake them from scratch, follow our Cheddar Bay biscuit recipe. Got leftovers? See how long they last and how to reheat them.

How the biscuits began

Red Lobster brought the biscuits out in 1992 as "freshly baked, hot cheese garlic bread." Five years later it gave them their Cheddar Bay name. It was chosen to fit the seaside feel of its restaurants (Red Lobster, 2017).

They were created by Kurt Hankins, then head of Red Lobster's culinary development team, who drew on Texas Toast and French bread. They took the place of hush puppies, which hadn't caught on with guests (KTVU).

Questions about this menu

How long do Cheddar Bay Biscuits keep?

About 1 to 2 days at room temperature in an airtight container. The cheddar and the butter topping are dairy, so they keep for less time than a plain biscuit. In the fridge they last a few days longer, but they go stale faster.

What's the best way to reheat Cheddar Bay Biscuits?

An air fryer at 350°F for about 3 minutes comes closest to fresh. An oven or toaster oven at 350°F for about 7 minutes is next best. A microwave is fastest but can leave them dense or rubbery.

How often does Red Lobster bake Cheddar Bay Biscuits?

Red Lobster said in 2017 that its restaurants mix and bake a fresh batch about every 15 minutes, and that they bake nearly one million biscuits a day.
